Mike,Tribble"Textual Patterns: Key Words and Corpus Analysis in Language Education" John Benjamins (4-2006) | PDF | 203 pages | 1.40MbIt is impossible to study patterned data without some theory, however primitive. The advantage of a robust and popular theory is that it is well tried against previous evidence and offers a quick route to sophisticated observation and insight.. Themain disadvantage is that, by prioritizing some patterns, it obscures others. We also found during our intensive, machine assisted reading, that the text was more slippery than we had originally assumed, and that there was another patterning in play which subverted our initial reading. And again, the corpus tools were at hand to help us reconstruct the text so that clause boundaries could be brought into focus and the fundamental contradictoriness of the text be revealed. In other words, although we could not count on the text, the counting itself was an essential means for demonstrating its unreliability.
